ABOUT

Anna Shipulina

Within Anna's practice, she focuses on fluid movement, soft lines, and organic shapes, resembling those found in nature and the human body, seeking to evoke a sense of calmness and harmony. Anna believes in the power of simplicity, both in color and form.

Captivated by the raw elegance, tactile texture, and muted color palette of bare clay, she strives to preserve these qualities, keeping a significant portion of her ceramics unglazed. Anna's aim is to invite the viewer to engage in a sensory experience by physically interacting with the clay's surface, to understand the essence of each piece.

Anna's work holds a touch of her hand, reflected in its imperfect shape and the occasional fingerprints left on the clay body. It’s important to the artist that the audience feels the human hands that crafted the object.

In pursuit of creating work that is both aesthetic and natural-looking, Anna Shipulina has found traditional hand-building techniques to be the most suitable. It gives room for imperfection and improvisation. By shaping the clay with her hands, she follows its lead. The result is organic and unpredictable forms that are hard to replicate, giving each piece its own personality.

The themes of female identity, struggles, and perseverance are central in Shipulina's work, focusing on the transformative journey women undergo as they shed societal conditioning and embrace their true selves. These reflections highlight the resilience and evolution of the female body and spirit throughout this process.
